Common Questions:

My PC won’t Turn On

The first thing to try is sniff, if there is a smell of burning switch off the plug and remove the power cable.  DO NOT try anything else as there is a risk of fire. Your power supply inside the computer has most probably died.

If everything smells OK, switch off the PC, and remove the power cable.  Wait five minutes then plug the power cable back in, switch on the power at the mains and try to boot the PC. If it doesn’t power up it could be a faulty power supply. If it powers up, then shut it down from within Windows. By this I mean properly shut it down not sleep or hibernate.  Try to power up the PC, if it powers up then it should be fine, if not then it could be a faulty component like a fan that is causing the PC to overheat.  If the PC fails any of these tests it should be taken in for repairs.  If you live in Kent or East Sussex we could come out and test it for you, or drop it in to us (Just “the box” we do not need the monitor or keyboard/mouse).  We are right in the middle of Kent just outside Ashford can test the PC and diagnose the problem. Once you know the costs of the PC repair we can help you decide to either let us carry out the PC repair or recover your data and move it to a new PC.

My PC tells me it has lots of Viruses even though I have Anti-Virus

This is usually caused by what is called a rogue program that uses fear to sell you a fake anti-virus program.  Symptoms are alarming pop-ups, unable to get on the Internet and nagging reminders to download a “fix” program.  The best thing you can do is switch of the PC and get a professional to remove this program. These types of program are distributed by “trojans” small programs that get you to agree to them installing on your PC, hence the scary message. Beware it makes no difference whether you click “Yes”, “No”, “Agree” or “Cancel” they all mean the same – “Yes please install this on my computer” the buttons are just pictures.  By getting you to agree to the install they are able to bypass your normal anti-virus protection.
